Bathroom Renovation Cost in India: What a Complete Quote Must Cover

A bathroom renovation quote can look simple until the old floor comes up. The tile choice is visible; the condition of the base, plumbing and waterproofing may only become clear after opening the room. For a 6×8 ft bathroom, the floor is just 48 sq ft, yet a full renovation can involve demolition, debris removal, pipe work, waterproofing, wall and floor tiles, sanitaryware and several kinds of labour. Pricing it as “48 sq ft of tiles” misses most of the job.

Neither number is an Indian average or an offer you should expect locally. Its purpose is to make missing items visible when you obtain real quotations.

First decide whether this is a refresh or a rebuild

Consider two neighbours with bathrooms of the same size. One wants to replace taps, a mirror and a damaged basin while leaving sound tiles and plumbing in place. The other has water marks outside the bathroom and plans to remove the floor and wall finish. Calling both jobs a “bathroom renovation” hides a major difference in scope.

Walk the room with the contractor. Record which fixtures stay, whether wall tiles remain, where the floor drain sits, and which plumbing or electrical points will move. Ask how the cause of any dampness will be investigated. Do not assume a new tile finish will solve a leak behind the surface. If pipes, floor base or waterproofing are opened, write down the repair and testing process before new tiles cover them.

This decision also controls what can be measured early. You can count the exposed floor and proposed tiled wall area now. You cannot know the exact repair behind a concealed leak from the floor area alone. Keep any uncertain repair as a clearly marked provisional item, to be priced and approved when the condition is visible.

Measure the surfaces the tile dealer will ask about

Suppose the bathroom is 6×8 ft, the wall tile rises 7 ft, and a 3×7 ft door is not tiled. The floor is 6 × 8 = 48 sq ft. The gross wall-tile area is 2 × (6 + 8) × 7 = 196 sq ft. Subtracting the 21 sq ft door leaves 175 sq ft of flat wall face. These measurements are for this example only; a window, shower niche or boxed pipe changes the takeoff.

The installer may allow extra tile for cuts and breakage. If the agreed example allowance is 10%, the planning areas become 52.8 sq ft for the floor and 192.5 sq ft for the walls. They are purchase allowances, not extra floor or wall to be installed. The actual order must be rounded to the chosen tile's carton size, separately for floor and wall products. Do not quietly use the 175 sq ft of visible wall tile as the waterproofing quantity. Waterproofing boundaries depend on the selected system, substrate and wet-area details. Agree on the surfaces, junctions, penetrations and test with the contractor and the chosen product instructions. Put the hidden work before the finish selection

A sensible written sequence for a complete redo is removal and disposal, inspection of the opened room, approved plumbing and electrical changes, base and waterproofing work, testing, tiling, grouting, then fixture installation. The actual sequence and waiting times should follow the contractor's method and product instructions. A quote that only lists new tiles and taps has not yet described the complete job.

The tile rate itself can conceal several choices. Is it a material-only showroom rate, a rate for installation on a prepared base, or a rate including adhesive, grout and edge trims? Is old tile removal included? Who pays to move debris out of the building? Will the contractor make good the door threshold and the wall outside the bathroom if opened? The answer belongs beside each item, not in a verbal understanding.

If the family sets aside an illustrative 10% planning reserve, that is another ₹1,00,000 × 0.10 = ₹10,000, making a ₹1,10,000 planning amount. The reserve is not money already owed to the contractor. Use it to decide what you can afford if concealed damage is found, then approve any changed work and price in writing. Replace all assumed amounts with dated local quotes; inspect the exact models and quantities offered.

Compare two offers on the same bathroom

Suppose a second quote is lower but says only “bathroom complete.” Ask both contractors to price the same tile height, 48 sq ft floor, 175 sq ft flat wall face, selected fittings and waterproofing scope. Mark which items are fixed, which are allowances and which will be measured after demolition. A cheap tile material line does not compensate for a missing waterproofing or plumbing line.

Before work starts, keep the fixture list, tile carton details and written scope with the measured bathroom layout.
