The method, with an example

Formula

Net wall volume ÷ effective brick volume including joints gives the theoretical brick count. Wastage is added before rounding up.

Worked example

A 4 m × 3 m wall, 200 mm thick, with 2 m² of openings has 2 m³ net volume. A 200 × 100 × 100 mm effective module gives 1,000 bricks before wastage.

What this result assumes

  • • Each wall keeps its own dimensions and openings.
  • • For linked surface work, opening faces use the thickness of their own wall.
  • • The entered joint thickness applies in each unit direction.

What it does not cover

  • • Bond pattern, cut bricks, piers and site breakage may require a project-specific allowance.

Questions that come up on site

Are doors and windows deducted?

Yes. Add each opening to its actual wall. It is deducted once from that wall only.

Does the calculator include mortar?

Joint thickness affects the brick count, but cement and sand are calculated separately in the brickwork mortar module.
