Calculate mortar for the brickwork

Start with the whole masonry volume, subtract the solid bricks, then apply the mortar ratio and dry-volume factor for the job. Your saved measurements and defaults are already in place; change anything that is different on this job.

The method, with an example

Formula

Wet mortar = masonry volume − solid brick volume. Dry ingredients = wet mortar × dry factor, split by the cement:sand ratio.

Worked example

If 500 bricks occupy 0.7695 m³ inside 1 m³ masonry, wet mortar is 0.2305 m³ before the editable dry-volume factor.

What this result assumes

  • Brick dimensions describe solid units without joints.
  • Mix ratio parts are by volume.
  • Cement bags round up to whole bags.

What it does not cover

  • Actual mortar use varies with frog filling, joint profile, brick tolerance and workmanship.

Questions that come up on site

Why do you subtract the brick volume?

Masonry volume includes both bricks and joints. The remaining wet volume is the space occupied by mortar.

Do I have to use a 1:6 mix?

No. It is an editable planning default; use the ratio required by the project specification.
