The method, with an example

Formula

Net wall area ÷ effective block face area including joints gives the count; the wall volume provides the labour basis.

Worked example

A 12 m² net wall using a 600 × 200 mm block with 10 mm joints is divided by the effective face module, then rounded up after wastage.

What this result assumes

  • • The selected block thickness matches the wall thickness.
  • • Each wall and its openings are measured independently.
  • • One joint thickness is applied to block length and height.

What it does not cover

  • • Lintels, bond beams, reinforced cells, adhesive coverage and special blocks are not inferred.

Questions that come up on site

Will this calculate AAC adhesive too?

Not yet. Use the block count as the basis and follow the adhesive manufacturer’s coverage for the chosen block size.

Why does the final count round up?

Blocks are purchased as whole units, so the allowed count rounds up.
